Anger Management

Friday, April 18th, 2003

After a long and frustrating 4 hours at work, I went to see Anger Management with Karthik, Ami, Prateek and Aktta.

Adam Sandler vs. Jack Nicholson

Synopsis: A mild-mannered businessman (Sandler) is wrongly accused of a crime and sentenced to an anger management program, where he discovers that his instructor (Nicholson) is a crazy psycho with his own serious anger management problem, and is probably the one man in the world most capable of making his new student blow his lid (from Yahoo©).

I was just looking for something relaxing and this movie was hilarious just because I was watching it so casually. If you’re looking for some serious fun, this might not be the best movie but if you just wanna hang out and laugh like a maniac, this is the recommended prescription.

Finally dropped Math

Thursday, April 17th, 2003

I was taking about 15 credits up until this Monday and working about 14 hours a week. It is common belief that one needs about 2 hours of study time (per week) outside of the classroom for 1 credit-hour spent in the classroom. Let us do some calculations here … 15 credit-hours X 2 = 30 hours of studying outside the classroom + 15 hours in the class + 14 hours at work + 6 hours of commuting to work (1hr each way). That all comes out to … 65 hours per week. Even full-time employees work only 40 hours a week! In any case, I think some of my supernatural friends might be saying right now, “So what?” Well my friends, reality check here: I’m not supernatural. All arguments aside, as some of you might know, I ended up dropping my Math class after all. The hands were shaking not because I still had some hope of surviving in that class … no! My hands were shaking because I was scared of dropping the wrong class by mistake. So the whole point is that now I am down to 11 credits and mainly only 3 classes to worry about - history, chemistry and computers. Life is good down here at 11 and you know what? As long as I take a comfortable courseload, work enough to pay off my tuition, nobody should have anything to complain about! And this way I get to enjoy my college experience rather than overpressuring myself to do some crazy amount of work.

What is the point of Honors?

Friday, April 11th, 2003

What is the point of honors in college? In high school, it is understandable that people would want to take honors versions of classes because there exists a concept of weighted GPA. But in college, there is no such concept. How is then the honors version different than the regular version of a class other than the fact that the honors version is much harder and requires more work? What I am trying to get at is what is the overall benefit of taking honors classes? I’ve heard arguments saying that employers and graduate schools like to see a student who likes to challenge himself/herself by taking honors classes and I’m down with that. This is an acceptable explanation and I agree to some extent. However, what are the chances that you will get the same grade in the honors class compared to the grade you would have received had you been in the regular version of the class? Chances are that you might end up with a grade that is lower than the one you might have achieved in the regular version. Therefore, you are hurting your GPA. Now tell me this, what is the difference between a student who took regular classes and graduated with a 3.7 and a student who took all honors classes and graduated with a 2.7? That just says to me that the student who took the honors classes could not handle the workload and was overpressuring himself. In an ideal workplace, myself as an employer would not want to hire such an employee because I want my employees to be productive and not just make commitments that they cannot handle. Therefore, my conclusion is that take the honors version of a class only if you get the same grade you would receive in the regular version of the class. According to me, the probability of such a thing happening is very very scarce.

Is the class really worth it?

Wednesday, April 9th, 2003

After staring at my math book for about 2 hours last night, I realized that this class is not working out for me. And then suddenly lightning struck me and I realized that I still had time to drop this class before it was too late. So I reluctantly close my book as if it was the last time I would see it open and quietly slipped into my bed. The next morning I wake up dreaming about a million excuses to justify dropping my math class. I am enrolled in a two semester sequence which is supposed to combine three semesters worth of classes into just two. So last semester when I thought about dropping the class (the first semester), I convinced myself against it saying that if I come out clean with these two semesters, then it would be of great benefit to me. However, not only did I get a C in that class, I also ended up hurting some of my other grades. So yesterday I was talking to my adviser and she told me that I did not need one of the three classes that this special course was giving me credit for and I thought to myself … this really sucks because the only reason I took up this harder version of math classes was because it would save me a semester and now it doesn’t! Anyways, I think that if I work hard, I can pass this semester of math with a C but the problem is that it is going to be at the expense of my other classes. I do not want to repeat what I did last semester so I’m gonna take it easy and drop the math for now. Oh well, MATH246, here I come.
